video + writing + editing + program development
The Whistler Adaptive Sports Program relies on a dedicated base of year-round volunteers to teach winter and summer sports to clients with disabilities. In the past, the organization was focused primarily on serving those with physical disabilities. More recently, WASP has had an increase in the numbers of sports enthusiasts with cognitive disabilities.
The organization wanted to create a new program to train volunteers on how to work with people who have a cognitive disability, some of which include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Brain Injury, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy and Autism. We produced 10 training videos with experts in each field, edited training documents, and helped develop the online structure of the program, which includes videos, training documents, cue cards, progress records and quizzes.
Volunteers will now be able to complete two different levels online at the WASP web site, which means they can complete the courses at home at a time that suits their busy schedules. The training videos have provided a way for volunteers to benefit from the knowledge of experts for years to come, without the challenge of arranging experts and large groups of volunteers to meet every season.
